The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced a major initiative aimed at ensuring the continued safety of commercial aviation as wireless communications technology expands across the country. The agency confirmed that eligible U.S. airlines will be able to access up to $2.2 billion in government rebates to help cover the cost of upgrading aircraft radio altimeters, equipment that plays a vital role in helping pilots determine an aircraft’s height above the ground during critical phases of flight.
According to Reuters, the FAA’s new rule requires major U.S. airlines to complete the retrofitting of affected aircraft by the end of 2030. The upgraded altimeters must meet new performance standards designed to prevent interference from expanding 5G wireless services operating in nearby sections of the radio spectrum. The rebates will be funded through proceeds generated by the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) C-Band spectrum auction, with the FAA estimating that each aircraft retrofit will cost between $80,000 and $120,000.
The move represents the latest step in a years-long effort to balance advances in telecommunications with aviation safety. Radio altimeters provide precise measurements of an aircraft’s height above terrain and are relied upon during approaches and landings in poor weather, making their reliability essential for commercial flight operations. The FAA believes newer-generation equipment will be significantly more resistant to interference from future wireless networks.
According to Aviation Week, the final regulation closely follows the FCC’s recent approval of plans to auction additional upper C-Band spectrum for future wireless services. While major passenger airlines face the first deadline of 2030, other affected aircraft operators will have additional time to comply. Foreign airlines operating within U.S. airspace will also be required to meet the new technical standards, although they will not qualify for the American rebate programme.
The FAA has made clear that the earlier compliance deadline focuses on airlines carrying the majority of passengers and conducting large numbers of low-visibility operations. These flights depend heavily on accurate radio altimeter data to safely complete approaches and landings when weather conditions restrict pilots’ visibility. By prioritising these aircraft, regulators hope to minimise any future operational disruption as new wireless services become available.
