Governments across Latin America are stepping up emergency preparations as forecasts point to the development of a powerful El Niño weather pattern that could bring months of drought, flooding, wildfires and extreme heat across the region. Officials are racing to strengthen disaster response systems, protect food and water supplies, and reduce the potential impact on millions of people whose livelihoods depend on agriculture, energy production and natural resources.
