BELFAST \u2014\u00a0The\u00a0Northern\u00a0Ireland\u00a0Childcare\u00a0Subsidy\u00a0Scheme (NICSS)<\/strong>\u00a0has\u00a0been\u00a0confirmed\u00a0to\u00a0continue\u00a0into\u00a0the\u00a02026\u201127\u00a0financial\u00a0year<\/strong>,\u00a0providing\u00a0ongoing\u00a0support\u00a0for\u00a0working\u00a0families\u00a0across\u00a0the\u00a0region,\u00a0according\u00a0to\u00a0multiple\u00a0news\u00a0outlets\u00a0covering\u00a0the\u00a0announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Education Minister Paul Givan<\/strong> announced that the scheme will remain in place from 1 April 2026<\/strong>, following its launch in September 2024<\/strong> to help reduce the cost of childcare for eligible working parents. The scheme currently offers a 15% reduction on childcare costs<\/strong> for parents registered for Tax\u2011Free Childcare (TFC)<\/strong> with children aged 0\u201311. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To ensure that rising childcare costs do not diminish the subsidy\u2019s effectiveness, the subsidy cap<\/strong> \u2014 the maximum amount parents can claim per child per month \u2014 will be increased by 10% from April 2026<\/strong>. Additionally, the administrative payment<\/strong> given to participating childcare providers will be raised to help them manage their own increasing operating expenses, the report noted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A local news outlet also highlighted comments from Givan, who said the scheme \u201chas helped ease the financial burden on thousands of parents,\u201d<\/strong> saving eligible families more than \u00a325\u202fmillion since its launch. When combined with TFC, the total estimated savings for working families could exceed \u00a350\u202fmillion. The Minister emphasised that although the final Executive budget for 2026\u201127 has yet to be agreed, NICSS remains a priority support measure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The scheme continues to be delivered by registered childcare providers participating in the Tax\u2011Free Childcare programme<\/strong>, including day\u2011care centres, playgroups, childminders, primary schools, and Approved Home Childcare settings. Early Years \u2014 the organisation for young children \u2014 administers NICSS on behalf of the Department of Education. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local commentary on family support also points out that since September 2025<\/strong>, the NICSS has been expanded to include children of primary school age (up to 11 years old)<\/strong>, widening eligibility and allowing more families to benefit from the childcare subsidy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
