Muslim Council of Britain launches policy pledges ahead of local elections

19 April 2021 Local Elections 2021: Muslim Council of Britain launches policy pledges Today, the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) is calling on all prospective candidates running in local elections on the 6th of May to commit to a list of policy pledges to support their local Muslim communities as we begin our recovery from COVID-19. This set of policy specific pledges builds upon the work of MCB’s Ten Key Pledges to Support Muslim Communities, originally released as part of a campaign to encourage Muslim voter registration ahead of the General Election in December 2019. Speaking on the importance of candidates for upcoming local elections engaging and listening to Muslim communities, MCB Secretary-General Zara Mohammed, said: “In addition to contending with pervasive Islamophobia, B...

Study finds that caring for older people at home can be just as good – or even better – than hospital care

19 April 2021 Providing healthcare at home to selected older people who experience a deterioration in health rather than in hospital could reduce pressure on hospital resources and be less disruptive to older people. In this study, patients who received ‘Hospital at Home’ care had just as good outcomes six months later, as those who were admitted to hospital. The study also found higher levels of patient satisfaction with Hospital at Home care. A new study, funded by the NIHR and led by researchers from the Nuffield Department of Population Health at the University of Oxford shows that caring for a select group of vulnerable, older people at home can improve patient outcomes, while reducing pressures on hospitals. The results are published today in Annals of Interna...

Taking a Stand: American Advocates for LGBTQ Rights and Hate Crimes Legislation

FORT WORTH, Texas — American joined with dozens of other Texas-based companies today in an open letter to state lawmakers, making clear the airline supports the inclusion of LGBTQ people in nondiscrimination laws and opposes any effort to exclude the LGBTQ community from full civil rights protections under the law. The effort was led by Texas Competes, a coalition of businesses aligned on ensuring a fair and welcoming Texas for LGBTQ people. “Discrimination of any kind runs counter to American’s mission of taking care of people on life’s journey. Equity and inclusion are core values critical to the success of our company, and laws that create unequal treatment are not only bad policy, but are also bad for business,” said Molly Wilkinson, Vice President of Regulatory Affairs and PRIDE EB...

NHS and social care funding

Thank you very much Madam Deputy Speaker, and with permission, I’d like to make a statement on the support we’re giving to the NHS and social care to help recover from the pandemic. But before turning to that, I would like to also update the House on vaccine supply and the roll-out, and set out the facts, given some of the speculation that we have seen overnight. Vaccine supply Let me set out the position absolutely straightforwardly. Throughout the vaccination programme the pace of roll-out has always been determined by the availability of supply. As I’ve said to this House many times: supply is the rate-limiting factor. The process of manufacturing vaccines is complicated and subject to unpredictability. And because we get supplies out into the field so fast, and run a h...
